The right tools help your artwork look vibrant, smooth, and professional — and they can make the process more enjoyable too.

In this guide, we’ll explore the best coloring supplies to elevate your experience and bring out the true potential of every page in your coloring book.

🖍️ 1. Colored Pencils — The All-Around Classic

Colored pencils are the most versatile and beginner-friendly coloring tools available. They work beautifully on most adult coloring book paper and allow for impressive control, shading, and blending.

Why we love them:

  • Great for layering and blending
  • Easy to control for fine details
  • Wide variety of colors available

Tips for best results:

  • Use light pressure for layering colors
  • I like to color in soft circles, rather than straight lines.
  • Try a colorless blender pencil to soften edges
  • Keep pencils sharp for fine details

If you’re focusing on gradients, textured shading, or realistic effects, high-quality colored pencils should be your go-to.

I’ll give you my favorite method for getting a good blend with colored pencils: hand sanitizer! Stay with me. Hand sanitizer is mostly rubbing alcohol (which you can use instead, if you prefer). The alcohol melts the wax in the colored pencil and allows you to blend your colors using a paint brush. I do it in layers (i.e.; color, blend, color blend, etc.) You’ll be amazed at the result. I will say that your results will vary based upon the quality of the pencils you are using, so YMMV.

🖊️ 2. Gel Pens — Bright, Smooth, and Fun

Gel pens are perfect for adding vibrant pops of color and highlights. Metallics, neons, and glitter gels can turn an ordinary page into something stunning.

Best used for:

  • Fine details
  • Patterns and intricate designs
  • Adding sparkle or shimmer

Pro tips:

  • Let ink dry before turning the page
  • Use them on smooth paper to avoid skipping
  • Keep a variety of colors on hand for layering effects

Gel pens are especially great for mandalas and detailed floral designs. Note: some gel ink will just bead up over colored pencils because of the wax in the pencil, so I find it best to use this as the first layer.

🖌️ 3. Alcohol-Based Markers — Rich, Saturated Color

Alcohol-based markers (like Copic, Prismacolor, and Ohuhu) deliver smooth, vivid color that blends like a dream. They’re ideal for bold, expressive pages and are popular among artists who want dynamic, saturated results.

Why they’re worth it:

  • Seamless blending
  • Deep, rich color payoff
  • Professional finish

Notes before you dive in:

  • Use marker-friendly paper to prevent bleed-through
  • Protect pages beneath with a scrap sheet or wax or butcher paper
  • Blend with marker tips or colorless blenders

If your coloring books include larger open areas or you enjoy vibrant effects, these markers are a must-try.

✏️ 4. Blending Tools — For Smooth Transitions

Blending tools help create soft, luminous effects that make your coloring pages really stand out.

Top choices:

  • Colorless blender pens
  • Blending stumps / tortillons
  • Soft cotton swabs or paper towels

How blending helps:

  • Smooths out pencil lines
  • Creates gradient effects
  • Adds depth and dimension

Pair your colored pencils or markers with blending tools to make colors naturally flow into one another.

✨ 5. White Pens & Highlights — Add Depth and Shine

Want your colors to “pop”? A white gel pen or white pencil can add highlights, extra contrast, and visual interest.

Where to use them:

Light reflections on objects

Eye and hair details

Floral highlights

Just a small touch of white can bring a piece to life and give your work a polished appearance.

🧰 6. Paper Protectors & Accessories

Protecting your work and workspace keeps things neat and stress-free.

Helpful extras:

  • Sheet protectors between pages
  • Clipboard or drawing board
  • Sharpener with reservoir
  • Ruler for straight edges
  • Eraser pencil for detailed lifting

These add-ons make your creative process smoother and let you focus on the fun part — coloring!

🎨 Pro Tips for Gorgeous Coloring Results

Whether you’re using colored pencils, markers, or gel pens, here are some universal tips to make your pages shine:

✔️ Start Light, Then Layer

Apply lighter tones first, then build up darker values gradually. This gives you more control and richer results.

✔️ Test on Scrap Paper

Always try new tools or techniques on a separate sheet before going straight into your coloring book.

✔️ Use Light Pressure for Shading

Especially with pencils — light, repeated strokes create texture and depth without damaging the paper.

✔️ Blend for Smooth Transitions

Layer and blend for seamless colors that transition beautifully.
